When you ask your child why they love snow days, the common answer is, “Because there is no school!” But when you get down deeper, there is something about having an unexpected day of freedom. It is a gift. Better yet, a total surprise. And who doesn’t love surprises.
Here in Colorado, believe it or not, we rarely get snow days. Our town and our constituents are too adept at dealing with the snow. Our cars already dawn snow tires, the roads are plowed immediately, which means it takes a lot of the good old white stuff to slow our day. Today, we finally got our snow day.
With an out-of-the-ordinary moment comes a sense of anything goes. Let’s indulge. This mindset quickly equated to us trudging along in search of the perfect hill pitch to tear our sleds down. Then who can resist girl scout thin mint cookies and mugs of carmel hot chocolate at nine in the morning. Now with pizza sizzling in the oven (might as well eat more, right?) we have friends coming over to join in and a possible movie in our near future. We can’t waste any aspect of our gifted snow day. That would be unthinkable.
What does that have to do with blogging you may ask as that is typically what this blog is about. Well, absolutely nothing as this is not a typical day. Both the blog today and its rare beast of a snow day are taking advantage to approach their circumstances a bit differently. Sometimes things must be done for the pure enjoyment of doing. Happy snow day!
